Great week for the Crusaders

This past week Capital Went 2-0-0 in OAC play and now sits as one of two undefeated teams in the conference.  Although it is early in the season we are very excited about the opportunities ahead, especially considering we just knocked off the pre-season favorite Ohio Northern.  To ready more about the win check out the story below!

The Amazing Race.... Capital Style!!!

To start off the 2012 season the Crusaders went through their NCAA meetings and Sports Medicine talks on Friday just like every other student-athlete in the NCAA.  But, after that we decided the best way to spend our first day getting to know each other was through the Amazing Race.... through Bexley!

Our team was divided into eight teams of four girls each.  Then, they were given a clue where they could find the first folder and their first five assignments.  At each stop they were given tasks to visit sites all around the Bexley and Capital area and take pictures with their group.  After five tasks they got their next clue where to find the next set of race tasks.  Then, the first group to complete their tasks and get all their pictures in to the coaching staff won the Capital Amazing Race.   Due to NCAA rules we could not give out prizes like the real TV Show, however, the winning team of Kate Connell, Rachael WIntering, Megan Tolnar and Kelsey Kaiser does get to choose the location of our meal on our first away trip... and food is a big deal to this team!

The sights the girls will show you below include:  The Bexley/Columbus Fire House, The Governor's Mansion, The Capital University Martin Luther Statue, A picture of the 1929 Capital Football team at Graeters Ice Cream, The Ohio map on the playground of Montrose Elementary, Johnson's Ice Cream, a Capital Police Officer, Roll bike shop, The Capital University piece of the Berlin Wall, the Bexley Pool, a Bexley City Hall employee, Capital Men';s Soccer Coach Alan Yost, Jeni's Ice Cream and the Reflection bench at the Capital Fountains.

We hope you will enjoy the pictures below from the amazing race and check back often to keep up with the Crusaders as we go through preseason and defend our 2011 OAC Championship!

You never know where you will find Capital Soccer!

Yesterday we made the news in Gainesville, Florida as a member of our 2012 class announced her commitment to Capital at a press conference at P.K. Yonge HS.  Allison was the 2012 Gainesville Sun Small School Player of the Year and scored 103 goals as a midfielder for the Blue Wave.

We want to congratulate Allison for this cool honor and are looking forward to seeing her on campus in August!

Capital Women's Soccer Blog Reaches 10K!

We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to visit our blog over the past 13 months.  When we created our blog on March 24th of 2011 we honestly did not know how many people would take the time to visit the blog and read about our program.  However, as we looked at our counter on April 24th we've had more than 10, 000 visitors!

10,000 visitors in a year is an amazing number of viewers and we are very grateful for your support.  We hope that visitors will continue to follow out site in the coming year as these tremendous student-athletes work to set even more records than they did in 2011!

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY... MORGAN AUSTIN

According to Coach Kouns "The more we saw her play the thing that we liked about Morgan was her ability to get forward from the back and join in the attack.  In our system that is an important trait and the fact that she has a background as a striker certainly plays into her favor and will offer her a chance to compete for a spot on the field quickly."

This evening our team was fortunate enough to host a showing of the Jay DeMerit film, Rise and Shine.  It is a truly inspirational film and for our kids it carried an even more meaningful message as Jay stopped by to speak to them personally and share his story of perseverance on a one to one basis.   If you have a chance to see the film in a town near year go for it!

PS:  The pic is one that Jay tweeted after he left the showing.  A very cool guy!

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY ... ASHLEIGH SCHMITTLE

According to Coach Kouns "The thing we liked about Ashleigh was her competitiveness and willingness to battle.  In our system we rely on the defenders to be able to compete in one v. one situations and we really felt her competitive drive would fit in nicely.  We also liked the fact that in high school track she was a short distance sprinter so she showed the pace to keep up with opposing strikers.  Those two traits will serve her well as she challenges for a spot on the field."

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY... MEGAN TOLNAR

According to Coach Kouns " Megan is a very intelligent player who comes to us with great success in high school and with her club.   She is a tireless worker and that was one of the things that impressed us about her.  In the last two years she has scored a good number of goals from both the midfield and striker positions, so, we are looking for her to come in and push right away for a spot on the field in either position."

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY... JAMIE MURRAY

“Jamie has a knack for finding ways to score goals.  She is very good at being in the right place at the right time and that is something that can make our core of strikers better right away.  At the same time Jamie is also a very good defender.  She is smart and is deceptive in her ability to close players down.  I believe she has the potential to continue to show that talent in our program and as she is also coming from a very competitive club program so I expect her to quickly challenge for a spot on the field.”

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY... KIM HOERAUF

“We really took note of Kim at our Winter ID clinic and felt that her skill set would be beneficial for our program.  She is a terrific athlete, as exemplified by playing varsity soccer, basketball and softball at Thomas Worthington. Kim also has a very highly competitive streak… which is just what you want in a goal scorer.  I truly feel that when she focuses all of the energy that has been divided among three sports during her high school career she will end up being a hand full for our opponents to deal with.”

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY... MAURA FORTINO

According to Coach Kouns  "When I saw Maura play in the Disney Showcase I immediately recognized she had the versatility to help our program.  She is smart, composed and makes good decisions playing in the midfield or in the center back position.  When you combine those attributes with the toughness that comes from her Lacrosse background it is a great mix that will help her compete for a spot right away"

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY... RACHAEL WINTERING

According to Coach Kouns  “I had the chance to work with Rachael at camp this past summer and I fell in love with her work rate and her willingness to try new things.  That attitude has certainly translated over the past year as she has continued to raise her level of play in one of the toughest club environments in the country, ECNL.  As a striker or attacking player Rachael can really do some nice things and we are counting on her to bring that focus with her as she fights for an attacking spot right away”

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY... MARIAH RICHARDS

According to Coach Kouns  “I had the pleasure of recruiting Mariah while I was at the University of Cincinnati. Although I thought she was going to be a Bearcat when I came to Capital she was still one of the first kids I contacted to consider our program. She is athletic, strong, agile, tough and has a great attacking presence for a player who is primarily defensive minded. Mariah is versatile enough to defend in the midfield or in the back line and she is going to be challenging for a spot on the field right away”

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY... CAITLIN MCCULLOUGH

According to Coach Kouns "From the first minute I saw Caitlin I knew she was a player who had the potential to make us a better team.  As an attacking midfielder, or as a striker, she does the little things well and is constantly thinking how she can set others up or go to goal herself.  She is a consummate competitor that will immediately challenge for a spot in both positions."

Capital Soccer Premiers film RISE AND SHINE

On Friday night, April 27, 2012 at 7:00pm in Huntington Auditorium on the campus of Capital University we will serve as the Columbus premier for the movie  "Rise and Shine".  Rise and Shine is the "Rudy" like story of Jay DeMerit from the US Men's National Team who went to Europe with $1500 and a backpack and fought his way from the 9th Division to the English Premier League.

The movie itself is free but we will be selling popcorn & refreshments, as well as doing a 50/50 raffle, to help raise money for our team trip to Brazil! If you would be interested in coming to see it and support us please let me know. Huntington Auditorium only seats 200 and we expect to fill it!

We hope to see a good presence of alumni, family and friends there that night.... PS: Jay DeMerit will be in town with the Whitecaps to play the Crew the next night. If he gets in to town in time he will be coming by to make an appearance, so, it could be a really cool event!

Capital Women's Soccer takes part in prestigious Sports Report!

The Capital University Women's Soccer program recently took part in the 2nd Annual Women's Sports Report put on by the Greater Columbus Sports Commission.  The Crusaders 2011 OAC Championship and NCAA Division III National Tournament Appearance were part of the morning activities celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The breakfast also commemorated the fact that 2012 also represents the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark legislation for athletics towards girls and women across the country.

The program was sponsored by Key Bank and featured the top sports organizations in the Central Ohio area.  Emcees for the event were Fox Sports anchors Dionne Crawford and Ashleigh Ignelzi.  We are very proud of being mentioned int eh same conversation as the top female athletes in the state of Ohio and hope to continue to represent female athletes everywhere in this positive light!
